John Balzarini, PhD

Dr. John Balzarini is an urban sociologist interested in the causes and consequences of gentrification on cities and communities.  He earned his doctorate in 2013 from Temple University in Philadelphia.  His research focuses on community conflicts related to development and gentrification, specifically how different urban residents frame their right to the city in the context of neoliberal urbanization and urbanism in flux.  His current research project utilizes interviews and ethnographic fieldwork to explore the attitudes of residential and commercial landlords in Philadelphia and the agency of landlords to shape outcomes for residents and businesses of gentrifying communities.  Dr. Balzarini joined Delaware State University in 2014 where he has taught Urban Sociology, Social Stratification, Sociology of the Family, Honors Introduction to Sociology, Social Change, Writing in the Major and University Seminar.
