English Language Institute

Welcome to Delaware State University’s English Language Institute (ELI). The ELI provides intensive English language instruction for pre-matriculated students who are seeking to improve their English before enrolling in undergraduate and graduate studies at an American university. The comprehensive curriculum and program prepares students for academic and personal success through language and culture instruction and opportunities to engage and interact with current Delaware State University students and the community.

Mission Statement

Through engagement and interaction, the Delaware State University community seeks to provide students in the ELI with a diverse and rich learning environment that promotes the development of linguistic, cultural, and academic understanding.  The program supports students in their transition into American culture and academic life, and provides them with skills to be successful students and professionals. The development of these attributes aims to produce capable and productive leaders who contribute to the global community as they learn to draw upon their unique cultural and individual strengths, and expand their professional expertise and competence.  Delaware State University aims to offer access and opportunity to diverse populations throughout the region and the world, and the ELI further seeks to meet this aim by enriching the local community with cultural and educational opportunities.  The ELI also strives to support the professional development of a highly skilled faculty in serving our students and contributing to the TESOL profession.
